Is there any reason to make 2003 the earliest year available for calendar categories? I have data going back to 1999 that I occasionally use to look for long-term trends.

Those are the default settings. You can change then via Tools->Options... menu.
In the opened dialog go to Calendar section and change the start and the end of time extent.
From that point on all new documents will default to the new setting.
You also can easily extend the time extent of the existing document in several ways:
1. Using File->Properties menu. In the shown dialog go to Calendar section and change the time extent.
2. Using Categories->Calendar menu. In the shown dialog change the time extent.
3. If you have already Calendar category use property panel (you have to select Calendar in the category browser).
You can use also the context menu "Calendar.." when the Calendar node is selected.

Perfect, thanks! I apparently need to spend some more time digging around the defaults dialogs.
